The growth characters such as plant height, fresh and dry weight, number of functional leaves and number of tillers plant-1 were found to increase with increasing levels of nitrogen upto 100 kg ha-1 and with three equal split of nitrogen (1/3 N basal + 1/3 N as top dressing at Ist irrigation + 1/3 N as top dressing and IInd irrigation).
