Abstract:
Citrus medica, or citron, is a fruit plant belonging to the Rutaceae family that is said to have originated in India and subsequently moved to Afghanistan, Persia, Syria, and Egypt. It is thought to contain numerous bioactive components. Citrus fruits also include phenolics, flavanones, ascorbic acid, and polysaccharides such as pectin and heteropolysaccharides, which are composed of sugars such as arabinose, glucose, rhamnose, and xylose. C. medica has been shown to have potent antidiabetic, hypocholesterolemia, and hypolipidemic properties. Research has demonstrated that the extract of C. medica is safe even at large dosages, and that these chemicals counteract the adverse effects of carbofuran by reducing oxidative stress, as demonstrated by hematological, biochemical, and histological tests. Its nephroprotective effect, which stems from its antioxidant properties, lends credence to its historical usage as a therapeutic adjuvant for kidney issues. The pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, health beverage, and cosmetic sectors may find uses for the essential components found in citrus by-products, which are thought to be reasonably priced and renewable resources. The nutritional value, health benefits, and use of C. medica in the development of innovative, high-value food items with improved nutritional qualities will be the main topics of this review.
