The effect of irrigation and nitrogen levels on growth, yield and economics of grain amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.)

Abstract:
A field experiment was conducted at College Farm, N. M. College of Agriculture, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari to study the effect of irrigation and nitrogen levels on growth and yield of grain amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) during the rabi 2017-18. The treatment consisted combinations of four levels of irrigation viz., 30 DAS (I1), 30 DAS + 60 DAS (I2), 30 DAS + 60 DAS + 75 DAS (I3) and 0.8 IW: CPE (I4) and three levels of nitrogen i.e., 50% RDN (N1), 75% RDN (N2) and 100% RDN (N3). The results revealed significantly higher growth and yield parameters with irrigation at 30 DAS + 60 DAS + 75 DAS (I3). Significantly higher grain and stover yields (911 and 2401 kg/ha, respectively) were recorded with irrigation given at 30 DAS + 60 DAS + 75 DAS (I3). In case of nitrogen, application of 100% RDN resulted in significantly higher growth and yield. Significantly higher grain and stover yields (906 and 2388 kg/ha, respectively) were recorded under 100% RDN. The maximum net realization (₹ 35232 ha-1 and ₹ 35365 ha-1) and BC ratio (1.77 and 1.82) were accrued under irrigation at 30 DAS + 60 DAS + 75 DAS (I3) and fertilization at 100% RDN, respectively.
